Synopsis

What stud poker would be a bit like if there was a giant lottery machine involved, and the prisoner's dilemma.

The Golden Bank delivers its payload.

Four players are dealt out golden balls worth varying amounts of money (from a tenner to £75,000) and some 'Killer' balls. Two of each player's balls are on show, the rest are known only to each player. The aim is to eliminate the players with the Killers whilst keeping the big money in play, with a The Weakest Link style vote. Obviously players who dealt weak balls have to fast-talk their way into the next round. The final two players aim to build as big a jackpot as possible, and then inevitably go home with nothing because they're both very selfish.

The Golden Balls set, complete with 700 (fact!) programmable bulbs.

In Round One, 12 cash balls come from the Golden Bank and four Killer balls, and from these, each player is distributed four each, two on the front row and two on the back row. They then open the front ones and leave them open for all to see. They then each get to peek at their back two balls and afterwards, they take it in turns to announce what they have on their back row, simultaneously trying to convince the others they're telling the truth whilst trying to convince the other two that someone else is a stinking liar (invariably by 'shouting very loudly'). At this stage, balls on the back row can only be seen by the player who owns them.

The front two balls on show. This is a decent hand: two large cash amounts and no Killers, which pretty much immunises the contestant from elimination.

Then we have the vote, with some stylish cards that are put on stands that can be turned around for Jasper's 'The first/second/next/final vote is for...' The player with the most votes is out of the game. (In the case of a tie, the players who received no votes discuss who to save and who to eliminate and, if they still can't agree, the ball machine decides for them via a random draw - one player gets a Killer, the other gets an empty ball. The player who had the Killer is eliminated.)

The as-yet unrevealed balls are then opened and, rather predictably, there are a lot of Killers and missing zeroes knocking about, which often leads to how-dare-you hilarity of epic proportions when it turns out they've kept in someone with a shocking hand. The player who is voted off then has to 'bin' their balls (a.k.a. drop them down a chute) and do the Walk.

One player successfully sweet-talks his way into the second round.

The remaining players' balls go back into the massive roulette wheel thing, with two more cash balls from the Golden Bank and one more Killer ball, so we have 15 balls, 5 distributed to each player: two on the front row and three on the back row. Repeat the last round.

The remaining two players bring their balls through to the money-making round, along with another Killer ball, making 11 balls in play for 'Bin or Win'. Each person picks a ball to get rid of (Bin) and another to add to the jackpot (Win). If you pick a Killer to win, then your total is divided by 10, so if you have £10,000, your total drops to £1,000.

'Which of these completely identical-looking balls are you most drawn to?'

After they make up their row of five winners, they are given two final balls each: Split and Shaft Steal. If they both choose the Split ball, they share the remaining cash 50/50. If one chooses the Split ball and the other chooses the Steal ball, the Stealer gets all the cash and the Splitter gets none of it. If they both choose the Steal ball, they both go home with nothing. In later series, Jasper Carrott counted down from three before asking the players to reveal their Split or Steal balls. The distorted camera effect used to close in on the players is known as a Hitchcock zoom.

Key moments

One contestant named Nick got through to the Bin or Win round with another conestant named Ibraham and they both accumulated £13,600 in their Golden Five. When it came to the Split or Steal round, Nick said to Ibraham he was 100% going to pick the Steal ball, which left Ibraham (and Jasper) stunned. He also said to Ibraham to pick the Split ball so that he could Split the money with him after the show. Ibraham had a feeling that he was lying at first until he changed his mind to trust him. The result later revealed both of them picking the Split ball, meaning they both went home with £6,800 each.

Imagine if that happened on Divided.

Trivia

In the unaired pilot, the top ball was worth £200,000, and there was a £100,000 ball also.

Somehow, Golden Balls became ITV's surprise summer hit of 2007 (and they needed one after Tycoon!). Achieving audiences of up to around 2.1 million, it was ITV's first show since The Paul O' Grady Show to win the ratings battle at 5:00pm and the first show (other than World Cup football) to beat The Weakest Link.

Voted the Best New Show in this site's Poll of 2007

The smallest win was £1.83, won by both players, Adam and Chris, on the 2 February 2009 episode, as they both split the jackpot of £3.65. The lowest overall jackpot was £2.85, stolen by Hannah on the 14 May 2009 episode.

The episode on 11 February 2008 had the largest possible potential jackpot to date - £168,100 - after the top two balls (£70,000 and £75,000) made it through to the final round.

A special episode on 14 March 2008 (the day Jasper Carrott turned 63) brought together four former victims of the Steal ball from the first series and gave them a second chance to play the game: Chloe (22 June 2007), Stephen (16 July 2007), Sarah (2 July 2007) and Darren (12 July 2007). At the show's climax, Sarah stole £100,150 from Stephen and became (somewhat ironically) the show's biggest winner. Sarah had previously appeared in a team of Accountants on series 2 of Codex - in the very same top, incidentally.

From 25 February 2008 to 13 February 2009, the show was sponsored by ITV Bingo (powered by Party Gaming) - except in Northern and Central Scotland, where it was sponsored by STV Bingo (powered by 888.com, if you must know). From 2 November 2009 to 18 December 2009, the show was sponsored by Carpetright.

A short overview/review.

In one word: Fun

The Golden Balls online game is an adaptation of the popular daytime TV game show of the same name (see Golden Balls on TV), hosted by the 'lovable' Jasper Carrot. However, instead of having the opportunity to speak with contestants, you simply pick and choose who to eliminate depending on what balls they have on show.

Golden Balls online follows the exact same format as the TV show. It’s predominantly luck-based, but you could argue that there is some skill in choosing which opponents to eliminate in the first two rounds.

Overall, the game of online Golden Balls is fun to play. The biggest downside to the game however is the frequent, frustrating low wins in the 'Bin or Win' round. I’ll vent my frustration in just a moment.

The rating - 76%.

Golden Balls is really good fun, but it is simply let down by those frustrating falls from potential big money wins in the 'Bin or Win' round. Every time I select a 'Killer' ball and slash my total winnings I want to force my hand in to my monitor, pick up the ball in question and personally launch it in to Jasper carrot’s smug grin.

Whilst I love playing Golden Balls online I just wish it made it easier from me to win. It seems as though you get a bunch of really low wins/losses with an infrequent huge win every now and then.

Split Or Steal Rules

When you crack open a game of Golden Balls online, be prepared to enjoy yourself whilst you play, but don’t expect too much when it comes to winning money consistently.

How to play Golden Balls.

Golden Balls Game online, free Itv

The basics of the game.

  1. Round 1: Eliminate one of the other 3 players and their balls.
  2. Round 2: Eliminate one of the other 2 players and their balls.
  3. Round 3: Randomly choose which balls to win - avoid the killer balls.
  4. Round 4: Choose to try and split or steal the winnings.

If you have not watched or played Golden Balls before then this quick overview on how to play the game isn’t going to make much sense. However, I’m sure that you’re finding the regular use of the word 'balls' hilarious. We’ve all been there.

If you have watched Golden Balls before, the only game is almost exactly the same, except you don’t have anyone lying to your face and you’re never going to get booted out.

The game format.

Episodes

Prepare yourself for many more instances of the word 'balls' being thrust in to the middle of innocent sentences, making them even more hilarious than you could have ever imagined.

Round 1 - eliminate one of three other players.

In the first round of Golden Balls online, you have to choose one of three contestants to eliminate

Free

You can only see two of each contestant’s balls (hardy har har), and you have to make your decision based on that information alone. Once you have eliminated a contestant, their balls (yep) will be removed from the game.

Ideally you want to remove as many killer balls as possible, but at the same time you want to keep the big money balls in the game. In the screenshot above, you may not want to eliminate the contestant with the killer ball on show as they also posses one of the biggest money balls in the game. It’s up to you to choose your game plan.

Round 2 - eliminate one of two other players.

Round two of Golden Balls online is almost exactly the same as round one, except that there are now only two contestants left to choose from.

Each contestant now also has 5 balls with 3 of them being hidden (leaving only 2 on display like before). This makes your decision regarding who to eliminate all that more difficult.

Round 3 - Bin or Win.

This is where you try and build as big a potential win as possible. All of the balls that you did not eliminate from the first two rounds are on the table in front of you, and you have to choose 5 of them to contribute to the money pot.

  • Golden balls (ones with money in). If you get a golden ball, it adds to the overall pot. Ideally you want to get 5 money balls.
  • Killer balls. Killer balls divide the money pot by 10 as it stands at that time. You obviously want to avoid these as best as you can.

The 'Bin or Win' round is total luck, just as it is in the TV gameshow. You can reduce the agony by clicking the 'quickpick' option, which will quickly select all 5 balls on your behalf.

Round 4 - Split or Steal.

This is the tense final round. You could end up winning the money pot total from the previous round, double the money pot or nothing at all. It all depends on which ball you choose and which ball the other contestant (now your opponent I guess) chooses.

As the name of the round suggests, you have two balls to choose from:

Online Golden Balls Game Free Online

  1. Split ball. This is the conservative option.
    • If your opponent also splits, you win the money in the prize pot.
    • If your opponent steals, you win nothing.
  2. Steal ball. This is the aggressive option.
    • If your opponent splits, you win double the money in the prize pot.
    • If your opponent also steals, you win nothing.

Splitting is the safer option as your opponent will almost always split with you. You would be very unlucky to have your opponent steal when you decide to split. However, be prepared to control yourself when this takes place.

Stealing is the more dangerous (but potentially more rewarding) option as there is a greater chance that your opponent will also decide to steal. If this is the case then you will walk away with nothing.

Golden Balls online strategy.

The Golden balls online game is more of a luck-based game combined with common sense than a skill game, so the strategy aspect is limited. However, I do have a few tips to dish out that may prove to be useful:

  • Don’t always immediately look to eliminate a contestant with a killer on show. If they also have a big money ball on show it may be worth keeping them on.
  • Your opponent’s decision to split or steal is not always 50/50. If you steal, it’s much more likely that your opponent will steal also. If you split, it’s unlikely that your opponent will steal, leaving you with nothing. Splitting is safer than stealing.

That’s about as far as the tips and strategy for Golden Balls goes I’m afraid. Other than that, all I can do is wish you the best of luck!
